In the summer of 2006, our quiet serene neighborhood was full of hustle and bustle. Myself and a few other neighbors were appalled to find out that they were in the planning stages of a major subdivision for this area. It is a well know fact, that this land is on a flood plain, so how can permits be issued to build on a flood plain.

Look what's happening right now in the USA. Rivers swell, and next thing you know your home is under water.

Can the Grand River support all of this new developement? I think not. During the Summer months we have so many water restriction. Soon it will be every day of the year.

How much more land will be plowed under and made into houses, for people, and not for animals. How many more trees will be cut down to make way for roads, and not for birds.

We have seen this happen all too often, wetlands backfilled, animal habitats plowed under, birds nesting grounds chopped down.

Our environment is changing at an alarming rate, and because of that we are seeing more respritory illness. Ontario needs a Green Plan, but for right now we would settle for one in Brantford. So lets band together as a united Brantford to get the people of the City of Brantford to come up with their own Green Plan and submit it to the City.

We have to do this for the generations to come, or there will be no green spaces left for them to enjoy. No longer can we take the resources of nature as ours to master. No longer can we behave as the conquerors of nature. The path to sustainable development is to respond to the legitimate aspiration of peoples for better living standards while ensuring that future generations retain the qualities of life in harmony with our habitat. The responsibility of this generation is tremendous. It is in our power to choke the living organism of nature, but it is also in our power to preserve it, to nurture it, to replace plunder with harmony and waste with conservation. The concerns of sustainable development come late, but not too late.
